5 Tips on how to UTILIZE YOUR TIME BETTER
May 21, 2008Nowadays, it is quite easy to be distracted from your ‘target’ in an online world. Email, web browsing, videos and other similar random activities can easily eat up your precious time. So, how can we cut-down these.
Basically, you have to start thinking about TIME into 2 main categories.
ON Activities - Activities with a clear purpose and target.
OFF Activities - Activities with no purpose.
It is important to know that no matter how busy you are, you can always squeeze more hours out of your daily activities. Find those hidden hours and make the best out of them.
Here are some the quick tips to help you to go from OFF activities to ON Activities.
Tip #1 Set specific time for EMAIL
Set aside a time to check, respond to emails. e.g.
From morning 10:00am - 11:00am and then 5:00pm-6:00pm
to avoid distraction during the day. Also, let your users knows via automatic email reply that you will respond to them within next 24 hours or so. Let’s face it, if someone really needs me URGENTLY they can always phone and call me!
Tip #2 : Set specific time for WEB BROWSING
Do not mix the time of email and web browsing together as this will distract you. Set specific time for browsing, and remember before you start, be clear what you are looking on internet. Use internet to increase you knowledge power and find opportunities.
Tip #3 Prioritize you tasks
Before you begin work each day — whether it’s for your “day” job or your website — write a list of everything you have to accomplish that day, then prioritize the items on the list according to how important they REALLY are.
Next, rewrite the list so the absolute MOST important tasks are at the top of the list. Revisit the list everyday. What I do is to prepare 2 “to-do list”. i.e.
MASTER TO-DO List - Major projects/Tasks that needs to be completed.
DAILY TO-DO List - Daily task of the Master To-Do list, to get Master TO-DO List completed.
Tip #4 Utilize your “stuck time”
There will be time, where you will stuck doing nothing e.g. commuting on a bus or train, or waiting at the line etc.
This is the time, where you can plan for your remaining work on the day, and to visualize how you will be carrying out the daily task etc.
Keep handy with some notepad, pen or some written materials like documents, a quick book etc during these time, so that you can read vs. waiting.
Tip #5 Declare “I am on a ‘TV diet’”
TV is one of the biggest time wasters of all times. Instead spend your time with yourself ( yes, I mean yourself, do some self-discovery, know about yourself, what you like, what you don’t etc.), family, friends etc. Go for a walk in the park etc.
Allow say only ONE hour of maximum time for TV watching each day. Pick your favourite show and enjoy.
As they said TIME IS MONEY, and MONEY IS TIME. Don’t expect dramatic results, but if you keep doing above consistently, you will find yourself moving from OFF activities to ON activities area day by day.
Cheers!
